Muttaqi: Afghanistan Eyes Stability, Regional Integration Amid Political Shift

Afghanistan’s caretaker Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said the country is entering a new phase of stability and regional cooperation.

Afghanistan’s caretaker Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi says the country is entering a new phase of stability and regional integration, following years of war and upheaval.

Speaking at the Tehran Dialogue Forum, Muttaqi answered questions from former Iranian ambassador to Kabul, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, outlining the Taliban government’s vision for Afghanistan’s political and economic future.

Muttaqi said the country has seen major shifts in governance, foreign policy, and regional positioning since the Taliban’s return to power, signaling a move from crisis toward constructive engagement. He pointed to gains in countering the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group and curbing narcotics production as key steps toward regional security and economic revival.

“We are shifting from a battlefield to a hub for cooperation—economically, diplomatically, and in security,” he said, describing a foreign policy based on mutual respect and collaboration.

Addressing concerns over Afghanistan’s limited resources, Muttaqi emphasized the importance of transit and trade with neighbors, particularly Iran. “Peace and stability in Afghanistan benefit the entire region,” he said.

He added that Kabul is pursuing a balanced and pragmatic approach focused on internal security, regional ties, and economic expansion through trade with Central and South Asia.

Muttaqi also praised Iran for hosting Afghan refugees and stressed the need for continued diplomatic dialogue on critical issues like the Helmand River water dispute. He reaffirmed Afghanistan’s commitment to existing treaties, saying, “We seek cooperation, not confrontation—within clear legal frameworks.”
